After a short hike through the Belize rain forest you come to the entrance to a cave. You descend down into the dry cave and walk through it and then another one. Then you come to another cave, but this one isn’t dry, there’s a river flowing through it. It’s dark and and you can’t see the other side. You get on an inner tube and float down river until you come to the other side and then through yet another cave until you’ve circled back to where you started. The water is clear, teeming with schools of fish, the bright colored coral surrounds you as you dive deeper into Belize’s world-famous barrier reef. Every year thousands of tourists come to Belize with the sole purpose of diving in these waters.

The barrier reef is immense and there’s hundreds of great diving spots but if you are an experienced diver with the proper certifications, you have to visit the Blue Hole. The Great Blue Hole is an underwater limestone sinkhole 984 feet across and 407 feet deep. The Blue Hole is closest to Ambergris Caye. There aren’t too many sites out there with comprehensive coverage of what life in Belize is like. For tourists, www.belizetourism.net was always a popular choice. Sadly, it seems to have been abandoned as most of the information on it is outdated.

There are some things on the Belize Report site, as BelizeTourism.net calls it, that are helpful and accurate, such as information about the weather, and suggested lists of things to pack.

There is also a basic map of Belize, which, although isn’t very detailed, it gives you an idea of the layout of the country, and basically where everything is found.

Okay, so for those who are still concerned about safety in Belize, I found something you can do about it!

The Rotary Clubs of Belize have started a new program: Crime Stoppers Belize.

This community based service enables members of the community to take action to stop crime. If someone has information about a crime that has been committed they are asked to call the toll free number 0–800–922–8477. An international operator takes the information from the caller, who is given a code so that their identity remains a secret.
