Typical Belize Cooking at its best

Typical Belize Cooking at its best

True Belize home cooked meals are hard to find. Most restaurants try to dress up the local food in familiar costumes that we foreigners will recognize. El Fogon is totally different. The owner and four other cooks are cooking it up old school Belize style. If you haven’t been to El Fogon, chances are you haven’t experienced a restaurant quite like this one.

Located in the heart of Ambergris Caye, near the airport, El fogon is a hidden gem, literally. Finding this restaurant is like a treasure quest and the reward is great indeed. At this local favorite, food is prepared on an open fire hearth. Just like the grandparents used to do it decades ago. The way Read more

Can you Retire in Belize?

Can you Retire in Belize?

While there are a decent number of expats living in Belize, it does not have the same expat network and support system that you will find in countries such as Costa Rica. However, life in Belize can be much more pleasant, afterall, you don’t necessarily have to learn to speak Spanish!

Life in Belize is not for everyone. Before making the decision to move here permanently, you should come and stay for an extended period of time and see if you really can handle what living here means. Even before you make that trip, however, it is important to do a self-analysis to see if you fit the mold of the kind of person who can make it work in Read more

Learn to Love the Things you Hate about Life in Belize

Learn to Love the Things you Hate about Life in Belize

As with any country there are things that we love about Belize and things that we hate. At the end of the day, the good usually outweighs the bad, and that is why so many of us decide to stick it out here in our little patch of paradise.

One of the most frustrating things can be not being able to find the exact product you want, or not being able to get something you really crave from back home. Most stores stock some imported goods, but the selections can be extremely lacking in smaller towns. The solution: fall in love with the products of Belize! You won’t find fruit this good back in Montana!

The weather, which is one Read more

Typical Belizean Dish – Rice, Beans and Stewed Chicken

Typical Belizean Dish – Rice, Beans and Stewed Chicken

If you are coming to Belize, or thinking of relocating here, I hope you really like white rice and red kidney beans as these are two of the staples in the Belizean diet.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a variety. I mean, you can order “rice and beans” and you will be served a dish of rice and beans that have been cooked together in coconut milk. Or, you can order “beans and rice” and you will be served a dish of rice and a dish of beans that have been cooked separately, for you to mix to your liking. The contrast is startling.

Normally whether you eat rice and beans or beans and rice it will be accompanied Read more

"Grauma Sayings" from Belize

Okay… I admit, this is kind of a silly thing to do, but I was thinking about all the Belizean expressions I have heard over the years, and decided to write a post dedicated to Belizean Proverbs, or what your “Grauma use to seh.”

Here are a few that I like, the proverb, the translation, and the meaning. Let me know what your favorites are.

Weh dags nuh invited, bones nuh provided.

Where dogs are not invited, bones are not provided.

Meaning: Don’t go where you aren’t invited, especially someone else’s home at mealtime; they did not cook for you.

When trouble ketch yuh, pickney shut fit yuh.

When you get into trouble, Read more

September Celebrations in Belize

September is an exciting month in Belize. Two of the most important national holidays, the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day and Independence Day fall in the month of September, on the 10th and 21st respectively.

Belizeans celebrate these days in different ways throughout the country, but in every city you will find people gathering at public venues to be entertained and educated about the history of these celebrations. In reality, the whole month of September is celebrated; Belize tradition dictates that celebrations begin at the start of the month with the Carnival Parade (which was last Saturday, September 6th) and extend until Independence Day.

Every year there are tons of live concerts as well as other Read more

The Palace is the Place to Be

Belize isn’t exactly known for it’s casinos, but when the Gringo is visiting Ambergris Caye, a night out to the Palace Casino sometimes hits the spot. Although it is small, it is one of the first casinos that was built after the changing of Belizean laws in 1999. Located in San Pedro, and open from 7 pm to 12 am every day of the week except Wednesday, The Palace is a great place to enjoy an evening out.

Since it is a smaller establishment, The Palace only has a few live tables where you can play a game of blackjack and the maximum bet being is $10 US. It’s not exactly the place you come if you are looking Read more
