Entry Requirements, Length of Stay, Departure Tax

TravelBelize.org helps us out with the entry requirements for Belize:

With the exception of cruise ship passengers, all visitors to Belize must present a valid passport before entering the country. Please note that driver’s licenses and birth certificates are not approved travel documents and cannot be used to enter the country. Passports must be valid up until time of departure.

In cases where a visitor remains in the country for over 30 days, an extension of entry must be requested. Extensions are available for the cost of:

Up to 6 months for US $25
After 6 months US $50 per month

Nationals of the following countries do not require visas:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • United States
  • Venezuela
  • CARICOM member states
  • Nationals of European Community countries do not require visas.

Visitors are permitted to stay in Belize for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days. The following category of persons may be granted by the Immigration Department extensions of up to three (3) months at a time. These three months would be after the thirty day period given by the Immigration Officer at the port of entry.

  1. Persons living in remote areas away from the Immigration Office
  2. Potential Investors
  3. Business persons

The above is on the strict understanding that the applicant presents himself /herself in person and satisfies the requirement that the necessary funds (US $50.00 per person per day) are available for the duration of the period requested extension. Applicant must also have a ticket to his/her onward destination. Extensions are granted at a cost of US $50.00 per month.

To obtain a visitor’s extension, an application must be submitted to any of the district offices or to the:

Are you allowed to leave after the 30 day requirement and then return after a period as a perpetual tourist similar to other Central A;merican countries. If so, how long must a person remain out of the country. Thank you.

I just wanted to add to this very helpful post. This post is the information I relied on when getting my extension, but I wanted to add a bit more specifics on how you actually go about getting the 30 day extension.

    There are two ways.
    1. Visit the Immigration Office in Belmopan and request a proper extension, which I believe is given at 3 mos. at a time. (But this varies by situation also, as I’ve read on other forums -you essentially fall at the helm of the immigration officer’s mood) This requires you to show proof of financial stability-for lack of a better word, of $50 per day for each day you are extending. (per above)

    2. Visit any immigration office (the one I visited is in San Pedro since I’m staying in Caye Caulker), and just ask for a 30 day extension. This costs $50 BZ. They will stamp your passport with a 30 extension, counted from THE DAY YOU PAY the extension fee, not from the day you were granted the last day of stay. So my advice is, to get the most bang for your buck, do this on the last day you are given permission to stay.
