In a recent “From the Publisher” article on Amandala Online, the author, Evan X, discusses what electing a black president in the United States, Barack Obama, would mean for Belize.
He says:
In Belize, we are going to go crazy if Barack wins. So then, do you believe Obama would support us against Guatemala? As president of the United States, he could not afford to side with us. For Barack to reach as far as he has, the power structure had to know that he was not “black conscious,” so to speak.
Evan X. feels that an Obama victory would not only be a good thing for America and Belize, it would be a good things for the world. And it seems as if the world agrees.
See the Global Electoral College, developed by Economist.com. According to their polls, 87% support Obama, while only 13% are for McCain.
Although there may have been grumbles from some Belizeans and some black Americans that Obama wasn’t really one of them, according to Evan X. and Amandala, the great majority of them are now “riding with the ‘brother.’” (Read the full article here)
So, would Obama really be the better choice for the next U.S. President as far as Belize is concerned? With Belize being a hotspot among wealthy vacationers, the tax reforms that Obama plans to put into place would severely cut the disposable income that this income tax bracket previously spent on vacationing and investing in Belize. On the other hand, such reforms might enable more middle-class income families to vacation in Belize, causing a rise in tourism.
And what about McCain? He may not be as savvy as Obama when it comes to diplomacy, but if his Wall Street bailout works, then stronger banks mean stronger investment possibility in Belize.
What do you think? Although the overwhelming majority support Obama, is he really the right choice? And what affect will either Obama or McCain taking office have on Belize?
