"Grauma Sayings" from Belize

Okay… I admit, this is kind of a silly thing to do, but I was thinking about all the Belizean expressions I have heard over the years, and decided to write a post dedicated to Belizean Proverbs, or what your “Grauma use to seh.”

Here are a few that I like, the proverb, the translation, and the meaning. Let me know what your favorites are.

Weh dags nuh invited, bones nuh provided.

Where dogs are not invited, bones are not provided.

Meaning: Don’t go where you aren’t invited, especially Bel1someone else’s home at mealtime; they did not cook for you.

When trouble ketch yuh, pickney shut fit yuh.

When you get into trouble, you fit into a child’s shirt.

Meaning: When you find yourself in trouble, you will try seemingly impossible things to get out of it.

No stap ah donki weh yo no own.

Don’t stop a donkey that is not yours.

Meaning: Mind your own business!

If you want to check out other “Grauma sayings” go to Belizeans.com, and don’t forget to send me your best Belizean proverbs.
