Vacationers in Belize may find it most convenient to call home if from a Webphone in an internet cafe, because they are easy to find and inexpensive. However, if because of the nature of your travels you need a cell phone there are a few options you can choose from.
First, you can stop by the Belize Telemedia Ltd. (BTL) at the international airport near the rental car section and rent a cell, for about BZ $10 per day. If your personal cell phone is on
the GSM 1900 digital system then you can have a new SIM chip installed at any BTL office for BZ $50 and use your own cell. If you aren’t on the GSM 1900 system and you try and use your cell you will be automatically connected to a recording asking if you wish to have an operator make the call which can be charged to your credit card or collect. Make sure you check the rate per minute before you accept, as these calls can get pretty pricey.
You can also buy prepaid BTL phone cards and use them at the pay phone. A call to the United States costs about BZ $1.50 per minute, making it one of the more expensive choices. BTL basically holds a monopoly on the phone and internet systems in Belize, so for more information you should check out their website here.
