When it comes to dinnertime, Belizeans are serious about their rice and beans, or is it beans and rice… there’s a difference you know, and depending on what you order, your dish will vary greatly. First, let’s get a few things straight, the dinner hour, also known as the rice hour occurs midday; that is when Belize, like other Central American countries, breaks to eat its largest meal.
Now, back to the rice and beans/beans and rice word order. If you ask for rice and beans
you will get rice and beans that have been cooked together, sometimes in coconut milk, and served together. Beans and rice, on the other had, are usually cooked separately, and served separately. Red beans are most common, although black beans are sometimes used.
Along with your rice and beans you can choice between a variety of meat or fish, which is most commonly stewed. Game meats such as Hicatee, deer, iguana and gibnut are also served, if you’re feeling brave. Add a side of potato salad and fried plantains, and you’ve got the perfect meal!
